AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Charleston WV
854 AM EDT Tue Apr 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
A front brings light rain and snow showers through early this
morning, and a reinforcing shot of colder air. Next system
arrives Wednesday night into Thursday. Unsettled into the
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 855 AM Tuesday...
No updates necessary.

As of 207 AM Tuesday...

Cold front is crossing our area early this morning, ushering in
strong northwest flow amid CAA. Gusty winds of 15-25mph will
persist through at least morning before beginning to taper off
throughout the day. The Freeze Warning continues until 10AM this
morning for all of the lowlands west of I-79 and SE Ohio/NE KY.
Cold temperatures in the low to mid 20`s are expected overnight
in the warning area which could harm uncovered vegetation.

A Freeze Watch is in effect for the same locations for Tuesday
night, with temperatures expected to reach the low to mid 20`s
again in the watch area thanks to mostly clear skies and
efficient radiational cooling. Otherwise, high pressure will
take over for Tuesday before beginning to shift eastward ahead
of the next shortwave with mostly dry conditions, although a
rain/snow shower is possible through late morning/early
afternoon (mtns).

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 240 AM Tuesday...

Key Points:
 * Dry and tranquil Wednesday.
 * Warm front crosses Wednesday night.

Starting cold Wednesday morning with subfreezing temperatures
areawide. Dry and cooler weather conditions under weak flow are
expected on Wednesday as a surface high pressure moves overhead.
Cooler than normal afternoon temperatures are anticipated, reaching
the lower 60s across SW VA and southern WV, ranging into the mid 50s
for the rest of the area, and mid 40s northeast mountains. Winds
increase from the south to southwest during the day providing warm
air advection into Wednesday night.

Precipitation returns to the area overnight Wednesday as a warm
front lifts north ahead of an approaching low pressure system.
Scattered rain showers will spread from northwest to southeast
across the area late Wednesday night into Thursday. Lows Wednesday
night will generally be in the 40s across the lowlands, ranging
into the lower 30s northeast mountains.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 240 AM Tuesday...

Key Points:
 * Low pressure system brings showers and thunderstorms Thursday
   and Thursday night.
 * Broad upper-level low pressure provides unsettled weather
   conditions Friday and Saturday.

An occluded front and low pressure system move southeast from
the Mid-west into the OH valley and WV by Thursday morning. Its
triple point will provide enough forcing to trigger scattered
rain showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Thursday night.
Limited SBCAPE about 600 J/kg, deep layered shear about 40-50
knots, and PWATs near an inch will support isolated strong
thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. Therefore, added thunderstorms
for Thursday and Thursday night.

The front exits east of the Appalachians Friday morning providing a
brief period of quiet weather. However, a broad upper level low
pressure system invades the OH Valley and WV during the first half
of the weekend. This feature will provide unsettled weather
conditions through this time frame. High pressure regains control by
Sunday, resulting in another brief period of quiet weather before
another disturbance arrives for the beginning of the new work week.

It will be warm on Thursday with afternoon temperatures reaching the
mid 60s across the lowlands, ranging into the mid 40s northeast
mountains. The upper low brings H850 CAA Friday through the weekend
providing cooler temperatures. Some areas may experience early
morning frost this weekend. Temperatures then moderate back to
normal next week.

&&

.AVIATION /13Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 633 AM Tuesday...

Cold front has exited and a regime of northwest flow descends
upon the area. MVFR CIGs are possible early this morning at EKN,
CRW, and BKW, with BKW being the most likely. BKW may also dip
into IFR very temporarily early this morning as well as see MVFR
VISBYs due to light snow. Outside of this, VFR is expected
through the remainder of the TAF period, with all locations
likely VFR by around 13-14Z.

Gusty northwest winds will continue, mainly east of the Ohio
River, with peak gusts in the 15-20 kt range. Winds should
taper off by Tuesday evening as the cold air mass settles in.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 12Z WEDNESDAY...

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Timing of deteriorating then improving
